Cricket @ IIMA PGPX-4

While some of our classmates are busy preparing for AD end term exam on Monday, here I am, desperate to write a blog on PGPX-4 cricket gang. It will be an injustice not to dedicate a blog to our cricket team which awards me a slot in the team.

Let me begin by giving an intro to our key players (by default, all out our players are key-players. If they do not perform on a particular day or regularly – it is because they are out of form momentarily)

Suhas- The fittest guys in out batch. His physical fitness can give inferiority to a PGP guy. He is an excellent spin bowler and a useful batsman

Rishi – Our sports secretary, a “danger bowler”. He can spin on leg side or on off side but anything released from his hand does spin

Sandeep – A dangerous batsman and dangerous bowler. I am scared if he is in opposite team. I have seen him hitting many yorkers for a big shot. An art - which I want to learn but which I miss most of the times

Mandeep – He is our cultural secretary and I do not understand what makes him a good batsman. BTW the skit “Pappu can’t dance saala” was a major hit during PGPX-4 induction.

Sid – By immediate effect, such batsman should be banished from playing cricket. This left handed batsman only believe in fours and sixes and he is a real pain

Lokesh – Dangerous batsman and bowler. His jokes and comments are ultimate. We have many common hobbies

Debraj – Our CEO, a silent guy like Nawab Patuadi – a man of his own style – I saw him going for big shots many times

With such terrific guys in our gang, I am optimistic that we will defeat any team - be it PGP, FPM or PMP.

Power of Now

It’s been years, I’ve been reading books on spiritualism, philosophy and quantum physics and even explored many sites on NDE. While such readings impart good knowledge and offer much perspective to define the “power”, “God” and “nature”, nothing really convinced me. Soon I started disliking the literature that first deliberately builds a maze, proves that humans are weak, supports the theory of “pre-destiny” and once reader is fully trapped, it quickly attempts to define God/power and starts preaching. The word God is being misused for years and people, who never experienced it, use it with a strong conviction or others who deny it, do so with a confidence as if they know what they are really denying. I was not happy as after investing much of my time, I had calculated the square of one. I was on my way of losing interest and then someone suggested “Power of Now” from Eckhart Tolle.

I bought this one and seeing author’s picture on last page, I was wondering if it was a sunk cost? The book was lying on my desk for months before one day I had a peek into it. The initial few pages sounded little different and then Tolle really challenged me on page 13 ......“Thinking has become a disease”.... I was little surprised by his style of writing and found it too direct as if he was trying to attack the readers who were expecting a “quick n dirty solution”. It did not take too long for me to become his fan and I think he has done an excellent job and given an entirely different perspective on nature, human, mind, soul, thoughts, emotions, energies and pain bodies.

The theory starts with a claim that your mind is not your best friend as mind can process only the past data that has been stored in its database i.e. your past experiences/patterns in life keep on getting processed continuously. It sounds convincing as we always live in the past or else take shelter in future. While facing the “now”, we face only two situations—either it has been “experienced” – in which case mind gives us an inspiration from stored patterns(might or might not be applicable) and if it is new event - mind suggests to park it on future and if you do not listen to your mind , it withdraws and you are then left alone- what to do? It is like either follow the instructions or parachute out and do you really have a choice here?

In fact, our identity i.e. "consciousness of self" is derived from mind and hence all of us are bound to behave this way. There is no separation between “self” and “mind” or at least we are not programmed to see this distinction. Just to give a contrast, when we see a dream and come back to conscious state, we immediately reject the veracity of dream as there is a separation layer between consciousness and sub-consciousness state. However, such separation is not possible with our mind as we perceive “ourselves” as our “mind” and here comes Tolle with a correction “You are not your mind”. He suggests a practical way to get rid of thought noise by watching the thoughts like a dream – a simulation technique to deliberately create a subtle separation layer between you and your mind. So next time when a thought comes to your mind – just watch it (don’t resist it). If you try it consciously, you might smile as you might reject the thought the way you would have rejected it, had it been a dream!

PGPX @ IIMA

After playing for two weeks here......I learnt that I can never set my biological clock to follow a well-disciplined schedule and perhaps, I am not programmed to behave this way. I would rather challenge this assumption for two more weeks and then resign for it to become a strong conviction....

The academic pressure ensures that you at your toes and better keep your self-fulfilling prophecies filled all the time otherwise , there are good chances that counter Pygmalion beats you down. Before coming here, I tried hard to simulate the environment and practice some shots but no such simulation was Possible..primarily..because the mind did not have a talent to write the script for this life-situation...

My minds keeps on telling ..“whatever I resist, will persist ... whatever I befriend, will transcend”...

I have always been very friendly....

How the financial meltdown impacts Indian IT

There has been a good debate on the topic and I am sure we all follow newspapers and look out for acquisitions, bailouts, CRR cuts and sensex value. I have been trying to assess the situation and related impact on IT, though some more data points and clarity on market conditions would help build a better perspective. Some say that it will stimulate outsourcing and hence benefit India and China but let me believe that it is something that we do not expect to see in near future. It might happen after 2-3 years, once the dust settles down and companies implement "strategic cost-cutting" or seek "value for money". In the near future, uncertainty will cloud the sky and though most of the companies may not want to play extra-defensive by cutting IT cost, there might seek options to ensure better liquidity and it could mean- no wage promotions or adopting a variable pay model linked with company’s performance in a troubled market.

Does Indian IT get impacted by all this – YES, there is an impact on growth as a good % of total Indian IT market size depends on BFSI and though BFSI sector cannot stop the fixed cost IT operations, it will try to park the new initiatives and defer building new IT capabilities specially when it is operating in a survival mode. The big Indian IT companies will not feel the heat as much as small and mid size companies that have heavily banked on BFSI vertical for revenue. Trouble in finance sector may be contagious for retail markets though we need to wait until new year to assess the impact. Certain lay-offs are sure but I feel that giants like Infosys will be able to sustain their resources by enabling them to work in different domains and technologies.

There are new leanrnings and now IT services need to hedge against such risks by planning a rational distribution of revenue among diversified industry verticals. Hedging should be done by clustering the related verticals and then growth-plan should not count on one “special guy” for continued business. Having said this, some evergreen markets like Healthcare and Pharma should definitely be the focus of IT service companies. At theoretical level, it is relatively easier to do this kind of risk-hedging, however there are companies who try to explore and build on similar markets, especially once they taste little success in a particular industry vertical.

Does it really sets up the stage for golden outsourcing era? Yes, it might but let it be perceived in long term. Some might defer and try to quote a recent happening of City group captive buy-out by TCS but let’s accept that it was initiated 1 year back and hence can be learnt without learning the necessary and easy correlation.

The likely recession, though debatable, does send enough signals alerts for job-insecurity, tight credit process and conservative buying behaviour in future, the impact on Indian IT does not seem to be very huge until it really turns ugly and companies start cutting on IT strategically, Let’s wait for some more time to build a better perspective!

Salvation

Maalik bus tu rahe aur teri hi raza rahe, baaki na main rahu na meri aarzoo rahe...Jab tak badan main saans, jigar main lahu rahe, tera hi jikra-e-yaar, teri hi justazoo rahe

Life checked whether I'd been doing good?....I registered my crib "Well.. it could always be better"..Alas, I was wrong...Life was always at its best but then the quid pro quo was the excuberant & tolerant feeling which perceives, even vicariously, the beauty, the serenity, & the complexity of the process & further makes its more desirable....I can wager that being desireless (though sounds a paradox) can add to this...lets unlock myself & get rid of those umpteen yardsticks, emblems of my ego!!! . always eager to assess!!....I am free now.:)...but life never knocks at again....it rather spies me, smiles & moves ahead....
